Simon Mok is our most recent partner at Vincent Young.
With dual qualifications in both law and civil engineering, Simon has a thorough understanding and passion for construction which helps inform his legal practice. Simon is admitted in both Victoria and Hong Kong giving him global insight into the law and its application.
Here we sit down with Simon to find out more about his background.
1.Tell us a little about yourself
When I was a kid, I was determined to become an engineer. I studied maths and science in high school and applied for civil engineering programme in university. However, the university offered me a double degree program in civil engineering and law, which I hesitantly accepted because I was not sure whether I was interested in law. Yet once I started reading the law, I enjoyed it and wanted to pursue a career in law.
2. Are there any major matters you have worked on that you are particularly proud of?
I think there are two matters that I am delighted to be a part of. First is the Kai Tak Sports Park project in Hong Kong, a mega project in which I worked alongside a dozen other professionals including government lawyers, engineers and business consultants for more than a year to produce a set of bespoke project documentation from scratch. Another one is a mediation which settled a long and winding construction dispute in the Supreme Court between a contractor and a local government.
3. What do you enjoy the most about working at Vincent Young?
Maybe the breakfast and the coffee! Nah, it’s the support that I get from the team, whether the partners, lawyers or supporting staff. We have a great team of brilliant and like-minded people and you can always count on them.
4. How do you feel about being made a partner?
It’s exciting and challenging. It is exciting to take up new matters, tasks and responsibilities, but it is challenging when all of them come at the same time.
5. What do you hope to achieve in your new role?
I hope I can deliver excellent outcomes to the client and work together with other partners to promote Vincent Young to the next level.
6. What’s the biggest thing you have learnt in your career so far?
I consider listening to others the greatest skill I have learnt.
